The New England Repertory Company (NERC) is a regional theater company founded in 1996 dedicated to nourishing a company of actors and production people and presenting ever-improving quality plays. The company grew out of a series of Advance Acting workshops led by its artistic director Tom Hunter. The actors come from all over the region, including Rhode Island and New Hampshire. The workshops continue today, utilizing the acting methodology made famous by Lee Strasberg, Uta Hagen, and other New York based acting coaches.
For several years, NERC performed in venues in Providence and colleges in southeastern Massachusetts. Today, NERC is the “in residence” company at Mansfield Music & Arts Society. This arrangement provides stability and a permanent home for NERC and it gives MMAS audiences quality entertainment.
Traditionally, NERC likes to present some risky works as well as the great classic plays. Besides the classes, the company holds open auditions for actors about once each year and welcomes new talent as well as backstage personnel. Among NERC’s recent production are Our Town by Thornton Wilder presented in Sharon, MA; Pound of Flesh by Michael Bolus; Brighton Beach Memoirs and Lost in Yonkers by Neil Simon; and works by Edward Albee, Leornard Melfi, Yasmina Reza, Alan Ball, and others.
